Preparing Your Memphis Warehouse for the Holiday Shipping Rush

Memphis is one of the most significant logistics hubs in the country. FedEx's global headquarters is here. The Memphis International Airport handles more air cargo tonnage than almost any other airport in the world. And during the fourth quarter, when holiday shipping volumes spike by 30 to 50 percent over normal levels, that logistics infrastructure runs at maximum capacity. So does the incentive for cargo theft.

I consult for warehouses and distribution facilities across Shelby County, and Q4 is consistently the period that generates the most security incidents. Higher volumes mean more product on the floor, more temporary workers with less vetting, more truck traffic with more handoff points, and more urgency pressure that causes people to skip security procedures. All of that creates opportunity for theft, both external and internal.

The Internal Threat Is Bigger Than You Think

External cargo theft is visible and makes news. Internal theft is quieter and costs more. Warehouses that don't have independent oversight of their own employees during high-pressure periods are particularly vulnerable. A security officer on site provides more than a deterrent to external actors. Their presence changes the behavior of internal employees who know they're being observed. That deterrent effect on internal theft is one of the primary values of on-site security in distribution facilities.

Access Control for Seasonal Workforce

Most Memphis warehouses hire temporary workers for the October through December rush. Temp workers go through lighter background screening, they're less familiar with facility procedures, and turnover among them is high. For your security program, this means your access credential roster is expanding rapidly with people you know less about. Credential management during this period is critical.

Every temporary employee should have a time-limited credential that reflects their actual authorization. No temporary worker should have after-hours access unless it's specifically part of their assignment. And the list of who has access to which areas should be reviewed weekly during the high-volume period, not quarterly like you might do in the slow season.

Loading Dock Security During Peak Volume

Loading docks are the highest-risk area in any distribution facility, and during peak season they're running at maximum throughput with minimal margin for verification. Dock assignment management, truck confirmation procedures, and an officer presence during the heaviest receiving and shipping windows are all worth the investment. The cost of a single high-value load going missing is typically far greater than the cost of additional security coverage for the quarter.

Parking Lot and Perimeter

Warehouse parking areas in areas like Lamar Ave, Summer Ave, and the airport corridor see vehicle break-ins and perimeter probing by opportunistic actors during Q4. Regular vehicle patrol of the exterior perimeter during and after operating hours gives you coverage of the areas where camera systems have the most blind spots.

We do a lot of work with logistics and distribution clients in Memphis during Q4.
