Summer 2025 Security Forecast for Shelby County

Every summer, Memphis and Shelby County see predictable shifts in crime patterns and security demand. Some of these shifts are driven by weather, some by school calendars, some by economic conditions, and some by changes in law enforcement staffing and priority. This year, several factors are worth calling out specifically as you plan your summer security posture.

This is not a political assessment. It is an operational one, based on what we see in our patrol data, incident reports, and conversations with property managers and law enforcement contacts across Shelby County.

Vehicle Crime Continues to Climb

Auto theft and vehicle break-ins have increased consistently over the past three years across Memphis, with particular concentration in commercial corridors and residential areas adjacent to major thoroughfares. Summer amplifies this trend: longer daylight hours extend the window of opportunity, outdoor event parking creates temporary high-density vehicle targets, and warm nights mean more people leave windows cracked or valuables visible.

If your property has a parking lot or structure, this summer is the time to audit your lighting and camera coverage specifically for vehicle coverage. Cameras positioned for building entrance coverage often have blind spots in parking areas. Fix that before an incident creates the pressure to fix it.

Construction Site Theft at New Highs

The ongoing development activity in Midtown, Crosstown, South Memphis near the Binghampton corridor, and the continued expansion of medical facilities along the I-240 loop means more active construction sites than Memphis has seen in a decade. Active construction sites are theft targets. More sites means more incidents.

If you are a general contractor or project owner with sites active this summer, expect elevated theft risk particularly from June through August when school is out, unemployment is seasonal, and scrap metal prices are relatively stable. Review our construction security services if you do not currently have a formal site security plan.

Heat-Related Incidents in Commercial Settings

Memphis businesses with outdoor or semi-outdoor operations face heat-related medical incidents every summer. Warehouses along the I-55 corridor, outdoor retail operations, and food service businesses with outdoor components should have formal heat illness protocols in place before June. Security officers witnessing a heat-related emergency need to know what to do. So does every other employee on your property.

Graduation and Summer Festival Demand

Security staffing demand spikes significantly in May and June due to graduation ceremonies at the University of Memphis, Christian Brothers University, Rhodes College, and dozens of Shelby County high schools, followed immediately by summer festival season. If you are planning a June or July event and have not already secured security staffing, your options may be limited. Book early.

Staffing Pressures in the Industry

The security industry, like many labor sectors, continues to face staffing challenges. High turnover at lower-tier security firms means properties contracted with budget security providers may see frequent officer changes, inconsistent coverage, and reduced accountability through the summer months. If your security contract does not include turnover rate requirements or minimum training standards, this summer is a good time to renegotiate or evaluate your vendor.

What We Recommend for Summer 2025

For commercial property owners: audit your lighting and camera coverage before July. Check your access control logs and remove inactive credentials. Verify your security vendor's summer staffing plan for your property.

For construction project managers: implement a formal site security program if you do not have one. Minimum requirements are perimeter lighting, camera coverage of material storage areas, and at least intermittent patrol.

For event organizers: if you have not staffed your summer events yet, call today. Security staffing availability in Memphis peaks out in June.
