Hiring a Security Company in Memphis: The 10-Point Checklist You Need

Every week, a Memphis business owner signs a contract with a security company they barely vetted. Six weeks later, the guard doesn't show, the company doesn't answer the phone, and the business is back at square one, except now they're locked into a contract.

We've seen it happen to retailers on Poplar, warehouses in Whitehaven, and apartment complexes in Frayser. The pattern is always the same: the sales pitch was polished, the follow-through was not.

Here is a 10-point checklist we recommend before you sign anything.

1. Verify Their Tennessee License

Every security company operating in Tennessee must be licensed through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI). This is not optional. Ask for their license number and verify it directly with TDCI. If they hesitate or cannot provide it, walk away.

2. Check Their Insurance

Ask for a Certificate of Insurance. At minimum, you want to see general liability coverage of at least $1 million per occurrence. If they're providing armed officers, verify they carry additional coverage for armed operations. Request to be listed as an additional insured on their policy.

3. Ask About Officer Training

Tennessee requires minimum training for security officers, but minimums are not enough. Ask what training their officers receive beyond state requirements. De-escalation, emergency response, report writing, and site-specific orientation should all be part of their program.

4. Request Client References

Any company that cannot provide three current client references has something to hide. Call the references. Ask specifically about reliability, communication, and how the company handled problems. The answers will tell you more than any sales presentation.

5. Review Their Contract Carefully

Watch for auto-renewal clauses, termination penalties, and vague service descriptions. A professional contract should clearly state: hours of coverage, number of officers, specific duties, response time commitments, and billing terms. If the contract is vague, the service will be too.

6. Ask Who Supervises the Officers

A company that deploys officers and never checks on them is a company that does not care about quality. Ask how often supervisors visit your site. Ask if they use any tracking or verification technology. The best companies can show you exactly when and where their officers patrol.

7. Understand Their Hiring Process

Ask whether they run background checks, drug screenings, and verify prior employment. The quality of your security depends entirely on the quality of the people standing post. Companies that cut corners on hiring will cut corners on everything else.

8. Evaluate Their Communication

How quickly did they respond to your initial inquiry? That response time is the best preview you'll get of how they'll communicate during a real emergency. If it took three days to return your call during the sales process, imagine how long it takes when you need help at 2 AM.

9. Ask About Incident Reporting

Professional security companies provide written incident reports for every notable event on your property. Ask to see a sample report. If their reporting consists of a text message or a phone call with no documentation, that is not professional security. Proper documentation protects both you and them.

10. Visit Their Office

This one surprises people, but it matters. A legitimate security company has a physical presence. It does not have to be fancy, but it should exist. Companies operating entirely out of a cell phone and a P.O. box are more likely to disappear when problems arise.

The Bottom Line

The security industry in Memphis ranges from highly professional operations to fly-by-night outfits that undercut on price and underdeliver on service. The difference between them is not always obvious from a website or a sales call.

This checklist will not guarantee a perfect experience, but it will eliminate the worst options before they cost you money, time, and peace of mind.
