Active Shooter Preparedness for Memphis Businesses: A Practical Guide
No business owner wants to think about an active shooter event. The discomfort of that planning conversation is real and understandable. But the businesses that have survived these incidents with fewer casualties all share one thing in common: they had a plan, and their staff knew it.
As Training Coordinator at Shield of Steel, I work with Memphis businesses of all sizes to build preparedness frameworks that are practical, not just theoretical. Here is what that actually looks like.
Understanding the Threat Landscape
Active shooter events in commercial and retail environments have increased over the past decade. Memphis, like any major metro area, is not immune. The Medical District, Whitehaven retail corridors, Midtown office buildings, and East Memphis corporate campuses all represent environments where businesses must think proactively about worst-case scenarios.
The FBI defines an active shooter as an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area. These events typically last three to five minutes before law enforcement arrives, which means the decisions your employees make in those first minutes determine outcomes.
The Run, Hide, Fight Framework
The Department of Homeland Security's Run, Hide, Fight framework remains the gold standard for civilian response, and for good reason. It is simple enough to remember under extreme stress.
Run: If there is an accessible escape path, evacuate regardless of whether others follow. Leave belongings behind. Help others escape if possible. Prevent others from entering the area. Call 911 when safe.
Hide: If evacuation is not possible, find a location out of the shooter's view. Lock or blockade doors. Silence phones. Remain quiet. This is not the same as sheltering in place for a weather event. Active concealment requires deliberate positioning away from doors and windows.
Fight: As a last resort, when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to incapacitate the shooter. Act aggressively. Use improvised weapons. Commit to the action.
Training employees on this framework takes less than two hours. Our trained security officers can facilitate these sessions on-site at your Memphis location.
Physical Environment Audits
Preparedness is not just about what people know. It is also about what the physical space allows. We conduct environment audits that assess:
- Door hardware and lock speed on conference rooms, offices, and storage areas
- Sight lines from entry points into main work areas
- Availability of cover versus concealment throughout the facility
- Emergency exit signage visibility and route clarity
- Access control gaps that could allow unauthorized entry
Many Memphis businesses operating in older buildings along Poplar Ave or in converted warehouse spaces in the South Main district have physical layouts that create vulnerabilities. An audit identifies these before they matter.
Communication Protocols
During an active threat, communication systems often fail. Phone lines overload. Staff panic. The businesses that handle these events best have pre-established internal alert systems, whether that is a PA code word, a mass text protocol, or a dedicated intercom channel. Every employee should know what the alert sounds like and what to do when they hear it.
Staff should also know how to communicate with law enforcement when they call 911: location of the shooter, number of shooters if known, physical description, type of weapon if visible, and number of potential victims.
Post-Incident Recovery Planning
Preparedness includes the hours and days after an event. Who contacts employees' families? Who handles media inquiries? Who coordinates with law enforcement for re-entry? These decisions should not be made in the aftermath. They should be documented in advance and assigned to specific individuals.
Our team works with businesses across the Memphis metro area to build full-spectrum preparedness plans, not just the response portion.
